Whether you’re young or old, wounds can happen to all of us. Some may be worse than others, but there will most likely be a time in your life when you will need medical attention due to a wound inflicted upon you or someone you know. When it comes to maintaining the health of your skin, it is crucial to receive proper care for wounds throughout your body. At the Dermatology Associates of Mid Ohio, we promote follow-up care, detailed instructions that are easy to understand, and compassion until you are fully healed. We want to ensure that your recovery process is quick and as painless as possible, with minimal scarring. Suppose you need to receive a biopsy or excision surgery treatment in the Mansfield, Bucyrus, or Marion areas. In that case, we’re here to provide an outstanding experience with every visit before, during, and after your procedure.

What is Wound Care?

Open sores can be painful and cause embarrassment. Additionally, wounds that fail to heal may worsen over time and are susceptible to infection. An open wound can lead to hospitalization, amputation, sepsis, or even death without proper treatment.

Fortunately, wound care specialists have several treatment options to aid in healing stubborn wounds. These include:

  • debridement (removal of dead tissue)
  • hyperbaric oxygen treatment
  • skin grafts
  • specialty dressings containing ingredients like silver or designed to redirect pressure away from the wound

While many factors can contribute to non-healing or chronic wounds, diabetes is the most common culprit. While diabetic foot ulcers are the most frequently treated wounds among wound care specialists, they also treat other types of complex injuries, including those resulting from infection, such as gangrene or radiation wounds.

As our population ages and the incidence of obesity and diabetes increases, wound care is becoming an increasingly important specialty for preventing infections and amputations.

During Your Visit

If you’re visiting our offices for topical wound care, we implement key values with every patient. The most important is keeping the wound clean and moist. It is a critical part of the healing process. Also, we recommend that you remain “hands-off” with your wound site. Picking and scratching can cause permanent scarring or increase the chances of infection. If your wound appears to become infected, be sure to get in touch with our office immediately. Following your post-care instructions and taking proper cleaning steps, your wound should heal normally.

After Your Visit

Here are a few tips to keep in mind, along with implementing the specific instructions provided by your physician on keeping your wounds clean and healthy until your next follow-up visit:

  1. Keep the wound dry for the first 24 hours.
  2. After 24 hours, remove the bandage and allow soap and water to run across the wound with a thorough rinse.
  3. Applying a moisturizing ointment such as Vaseline or Aquaphor will protect the wound from outside elements and keep the skin from drying out.
  4. Recover the wound with clean bandages daily.
  5. Do not pick or scratch at the wound.
  6. Use cold compresses for up to 20 minutes hourly as needed. If you’re experiencing pain, ask your doctor if it is recommended to take acetaminophen.

It may take several weeks to see the wound completely healed. If you notice discoloration at the wound site, there is a chance that it could take a few months to return to its natural complexion, which is completely normal.
