Hair loss is a common occurrence in men and women. We typically think nothing of it as the majority of mostly men will, in most cases, experience hair loss, balding, or medically known as Alopecia. Alopecia is recognized as shedding, thinning, or poor quality of the hair on the scalp or other parts of the body. There may be areas that become completely bald or identify as skin disease and scaring. There is localized and diffused Alopecia. Localized Alopecia means that it is only affecting one place on the body, typically the scalp, and is the most common form, and diffuse is when hair loss has affected multiple areas of the body.
Alopecia occurs when there is a decreased growth during the anagen process or increased shedding in the telogen process. There are also factors such as hair shaft abnormalities and inflammatory skin diseases or wounds that damage or destroy the hair bulbs. Most commonly, genetics is the main culprit when it comes to hair loss, and it is apparent in about 50% of individuals by the age of 50.
Unfortunately, hair loss may not have an easy remedy. Our hair grows on most parts of the skin surfaces except on our palms, soles, lips, and eyelids. Hair thickness, length, and color depending on the site and whether it is vellus or androgenic hair. Vellus is fine, light in color, and shorter in length, whereas androgenic is thicker, darker, and longer. The hair then goes through the 3 main phases of the hair cycle. Anagen is actively growing hair, catagen is the in-between phase when the growth stops and the follicles shrink, and telogen is the resting phase for 1-4 months for hair on a normal scalp.
