Nearly everyone has been affected by acne at some point in their lives. Teen years are a dominant time frame given hormone balances and changes in the body. Those who struggle with acne as a teen may notice that it becomes more persistent as time passes, or it may begin to subside with age. There is a likelihood that most cases of acne will require a treatment plan from a dermatologist.

Understanding Acne

The acne we most commonly think of is Acne Vulgaris, generally referred to as “pimples” or “zits.” This subtype of acne will display the signs you can find in the following list.

The good news is with new technology and scientific breakthroughs, we can successfully treat many types of acne, including severe and cystic acne that are mainly caused by hormones and genetics. Our goal is to create a plan including topical products, hormone regulators, and specialized medications to treat each case individually and not a one-product cure-all for everyone.

Acne Subtypes

Pustules: A pus-filled bump on the top of the skin, which is the most common form of acne
Whiteheads: Typically small, white-colored buildups of dead skin cells and a natural wax produced from your skin called sebum that is sitting atop the skin.
Blackheads: Buildup and bacteria that have oxidized, resulting in a darker color in the pore of the skin.
Papules: An acne papule is a red, swollen bump that may be painful to the touch. Technically any raised bump on the skin is considered a papule.
Cysts: Infected pores that are blocked beneath the skin can become painful and are often caused by hormonal shifts.
